Through search warrants, State College police have obtained a black box, which might provide information relating to the speed of Anthony Torsell's car at the time he allegedly struck two pedestrians, killing one, a State College detective said.
At about 2:30 a.m. Oct. 28, Torsell, 20, of Bellefonte, was under the influence of alcohol while driving south on South Atherton Street in a gold Buick Skylark, according to court documents.
Torsell allegedly hit Aaron Stidd, 20, and Richard Smith, 21, who were crossing the street westbound. Smith died at Mount Nittany Medical Center Oct. 28. Stidd remains in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
State College Police Detective John Aston said the information received from the device may be limited, but it could still be helpful to the investigation. The device is only located inside certain vehicles and records information about the vehicle.
Torsell's attorney, Joseph Amendola, could not be reached for comment by press time.
Police also issued search warrants for an apartment where they believe Anthony Torsell consumed alcohol before the accident.
Aston said arrests for furnishing alcohol would probably not be made until early to mid December because the investigation into what happened that night will not likely be completed until Torsell's Dec. 4 preliminary hearing.
But, he said, search warrants and interviews have helped police determine details of Torsell's actions as far back as 4 p.m. Friday Oct. 27.
Aston said the furnishing charges would not be filed until police determine exactly who provided the alcohol. Right now, he said, they only know the address where it was consumed.
"Those are the people on the lease," Aston said. "Not necessarily the furnishers. A lot of people could have been involved."
On Oct. 28, a search of an apartment, 235 S. Burrowes St., where Aston believes Torsell was partying, turned up empty beer cans, empty Jello shot containers and liquor, according to court documents.
On Oct. 28, a search of Torsell's residence, 313A W. Prospect Ave., found Jagermeister, shot glasses, a flask, open cases of beer and bottles of Saranac, according to court documents.
