Paternoville: PSU should think of next year's Paternoville

"Not all games are created equal."

That's the philosophy behind Jordan Cascino and the Paternoville Coordination Committee's (PCC) plans for next football season - one that the Penn State administration should really pay attention to.

Despite the administration's decision allowing students to set up camp at midnight instead of 6 a.m. on Thursday, it appears to be nothing more than a temporary anaesthetic for a wounded student fan base.

What difference will six hours make?

The students who brave the cold and rain for the simple gratification of front-row seats at a home football game at 6 a.m. are the same students who will do so at midnight now. The line that existed at 3 a.m. Thursday will now be the line that exists at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

It would be unfair to say that the administration is just trying to take Paternoville away from the students - liability issues are everywhere: alcohol, weather, power, etc.

"The university is washing their hands of these liabilities," Cascino said.

No problem. But opening the floodgates of the fans to Gate A at midnight only makes these liabilities start earlier and keeps students unsatisfied.

That's why Cascino proposed having one or two games next season where students can camp out for the whole week - a scene reminiscent of the game against Ohio State in 2005.

If the administration is made aware of which game is chosen as the season's Holy Grail (either Notre Dame or Ohio State next year), then all liabilities can be prepared for a year in advance. (Notre Dame is Sept. 8 and Ohio State is Oct. 27.)

For other games, including those against Temple-esque Buffalo and Florida International, students will be more likely to accept a Thursday move-in day.

For Michigan State this weekend, students will have to wait Wednesday evening until midnight to actually pitch their tents. Then, the administration and PCC have less than nine months to piece their plan together.

Ohio State doesn't think that it's on the same level as Buffalo. Hopefully, next season's plan will agree.
