Assembly President Ricardo Torres presented a report on student government representation for academic issues and outlined options for the future of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Academic Assembly at last night's meeting.
Assembly members could maintain the status quo and continue to conduct business. However, the University Faculty Senate recognized the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) as the official student voice at its October meeting. Next fall, the loss of the Faculty Senate representatives will cause Assembly to lose half of its representatives and will not be able to make quorum or pass business, Torres said in his report.
Assembly members could also work with UPUA to insure the members understand their responsibilities in the Senate, Torres said.
In another statement, Torres said Assembly members could serve in both organizations.
Torres said that he will attempt to serve a dual role and influence both the USG and UPUA. Recently, he applied to be the chairman of the UPUA Academic Affairs Committee.
"That way, no matter what happens, the voice of the students will be secured," Torres said. "The new mechanism within UPUA could be just as strong as Academic Assembly, but we don't know what will happen."
Assembly members didn't vote on the report, and Torres said they should think about the organization's goals for next semester and be ready to make a decision by the end of the month.
Torres also said he didn't know if the Faculty Senate would present its report on student government at its Dec. 5 meeting.
