Watching our football team struggle this year has me wondering what has happened to the Penn State tradition of dominating offensive linemen. Why didn't Ki-Jana Carter and Curtis Enis succeed in the NFL? Because they weren't very good. Their offensive linemen deserved the credit. I watched the 1995 Penn State v. Ohio State game on ESPNU a couple weeks back and we ran the ball right down the throat of an Ohio State defense that produced three NFL pro-bowlers. With a running attack like that, you open up a world of opportunity on the offensive side of the ball. Currently, we have so much talent at the offensive skill positions, but with the offensive line's sub-par performance each week, that talent is nearly wasted. The offense begins and ends with the offensive line. No offensive line, no offensive production, period.
A message to Penn State football recruiters: You can get all five-star receivers, tailbacks and quarterbacks that you want, but they won't be able to do anything with 2-star offensive linemen. I challenge you to restore the Penn State tradition of in-your-face football, and then you'll see your squad of talented young players at receiver and quarterback able to tear apart defenses.
