Cornley sparks Lions in opening win

Collegian Staff Writer

Fueled by 17 points and 12 rebounds from sophomore forward Jamelle Cornley, the Penn State men’s basketball team opened its regular season by defeating Morehead State, 63-46, Friday night at the Bryce Jordan Center.

“It was good to get the first win,” Penn State head coach Ed DeChellis said. “Everybody knocked the rust out a little bit.”

Neither team was ahead by more than five points until the Nittany Lions went on a 14-2 run to close out the final six minutes of the first half. Cornley recorded seven points and grabbed seven rebounds as Penn State headed into halftime up 29-16. Last year’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year finished the game with a double-double, the second of his career.

“[Jamelle] played the way he’s supposed to play,” DeChellis said. “He played with a lot of energy and really got us going, really sparked us.”

Penn State limited the Eagles to just six points in the first nine minutes of the second half to put the game out of reach.

Danny Morrissey added nine points and six rebounds for Penn State. Shaun Williams led Morehead State with 18 points.
