Students honor veterans

Collegian Staff Writer

Veterans were honored and remembered this afternoon as students and community members gathered for the 38th annual Veterans Day Observance.

The Penn State Veterans Association, which is the oldest collegiate veterans association, hosted the event.

Many topics were addressed at the event, including the origin of Veterans Day. Guest speaker U.S. Marshall Sergeant Thomas Fitzgerald addressed the holiday in his speech by saying that Veterans Day was originally known as Armistace Day. The day is observed on the 11th hour because that is the time of the signing of the treaty of Versailles, which officially ended World War I. On June 1, 1954 it was changed to Veterans Day.
