This is in response to Robert Thomas' alternate lyrics to Fight on State ("Penn Stater says time to update fight song", Nov. 8). Need I remind you that "Fight on State" represents Penn State, not just the football team? And although football gets most of the attention, this university consists of a lot more. Our women's soccer team won their ninth consecutive Big Ten title, tying them for the second longest run in women's championship history. Our women's volleyball team has been ranked in the top three all year long. The field hockey team was the runner-up in the Big Ten tournament and will play in the NCAAs. We have a wrestler who was a runner-up at the NCAA championships last year and is the preseason number one this year. Aside from our 29 varsity athletic programs, we were recently ranked third by the Washington Monthly when it came to preparing our students for the real world. We also have a student-run organization on campus that raises millions of dollars for pediatric cancer every year. Still think Penn State is mediocre? As for the football team, losing to four top 15 teams with two combined losses is not that shameful.
We've still had a decent season with student athletes playing hard week in and week out. Dan Connor even played last week with a broken hand. And you're singing "blight on state?" These next two weekends, I will proudly be singing "fight on state."
