New football Web site features personality
GoPSF.com, Penn State football's new internet home, engages visitors.

For The Collegian

For the true fanatic of Penn State football, there is one place to go on the Internet. The new Web site GoPSF.com, launched on Sept. 1, provides browsers with several different varieties of media based solely around the football team.

The site is optimal for receiving information about the football team.

"It gives fans and recruits the best opportunity to get our image and message," said Penn State director of branding and communications Guido D'Elia.

This new site has proven to be very popular among students, receiving about 20,000 hits per day. Many of these visits are done by previous viewers, and many spectators spend a long time pouring over the content.

GoPSF.com is loaded with videos from recent games. The Game Story archive provides game highlights for every regular season competition dating back to last season. In addition, there is a list of the top 10 hits, plays and catches of the 2005 season.

The Web site was able to launch because of money brought in by the Blue-White Game this past April. It is funded continuously through the authentic game-day apparel that the site sells.

While GoPSF.com is primarily a source of highlight films and team history, what is most appealing is the personal touch it gives to the players.

"You get to know the personality of the team better than you would through the normal PSU Athletics site," said Ali Soheilian (sophomore - energy, business and finance).

The site allows fans to take an inside look at the lives of the team. Sophomore receivers Deon Butler and Derrick Williams guide viewers through the coaches' offices and some of the players' dorm rooms.

In addition to providing tours, the videos also give an in-depth look into the community of the team. They discuss who among the players is the best at video games and rapping, which classes are their favorites and which are the most difficult. These segments give the star athletes more personal and individual appearances than the gridiron machine they are on the field. The players even take time to share their appreciation of the student section, calling it, on multiple occasions, the best in the country.

The legacy of Penn State football is put on display throughout the site. Every major magazine cover featuring Penn State football is on display. There is a video showcasing the players who have been drafted into the NFL over the past few years. Past stars, including LaVar Arrington, Kerry Collins, Brandon Short and Larry Johnson, join the current players in discussing the traditions of Penn State football. Viewers can even see who wore every number in the past, as well as view what active players in the pros came from Penn State.

Potential recruits can look at the history of their positions through interviews with past Penn State stars.

"Recruits can see what it's like to be a linebacker or any other position here," D'Elia said.

The features of the Web site make it clear of its target audience. There are several extras that are focused exclusively on the fans. An entire gallery is filled with body-painted students and other examples of football fanaticism. Fans can post pictures or messages. There has even recently been a link added for people to mail in their thoughts on ABC announcer Craig James' comments on Joe Paterno's leg injury. Questions written by the fans are answered by players such as Williams, Butler, Dan Connor and Tony Hunt.

"It's more interesting than the regular athletics Web site," said Sarah Levy (freshman - special education).

"I like that it's easy to navigate," said Joe Glace (sophomore - secondary education). "It has great information from the interviews with the coaches and players."

Because it is fairly new, many fans are not aware of GoPSF.com, but those who are really like what it has to offer. There is, of course, room for improvement.

Some students believe that the site is too flashy with not enough content.

"I think that gopsusports.com is better because it's straight to the point sports news," said Devon Pogasic (junior - journalism).

"I'd like to see more stuff about what's going on day-to-day," said Will Barr (freshman - economics).

GoPSF.com is unique in that it serves as a portal for one of the premier football programs in the nation to connect with its fan base. "You don't see other elite teams doing this," said Soheilian.

"Nothing else out there is as dynamic or robust," said D'Elia.
