'Laguna' teen promotes trips

Collegian Staff Writer

Studentcity.com and the Penn State Marketing Association (PSMA) teamed up with Laguna Beach's Kyndra last night to promote "good times and debauchery" as a spring break option.

Meredith MacLatchy (freshman-management) and her friends came hoping to meet Laguna Beach's Stephen, Kristin or LC.

The information session was held last night in 100 Thomas to promote spring break trip packages. Advertisements for the event promised a guest appearance by a cast member from MTV's Laguna Beach, but kept the cast member's identity secret until she was introduced.

"I am not sure if I will go on spring break or not," said Alyssa Schaffer (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) before Kyndra was revealed. "Maybe I will hear about some of their trips if I stay long enough."

When third season cast member Kyndra came out, they decided to leave early.

"I watched the second season but not the third," MacLatchy said. "I was really hoping it would be LC."

Schaffer said she heard about the event from a friend and was hoping for second season's Kristin Cavalleri.

About 150 students attended the information session.

Sarah Sefchok (freshman-business) said she heard about the event from a Laguna Beach fan group on Facebook.com.

"I want to do something for spring break but I am not sure what yet," she said. "I wanted to come hear the information but having someone from Laguna Beach here is just a bonus."

During the presentation, studentcity.com representatives talked about different package deals, celebrity parties and hotel offerings. They also held a raffle and five students won free trips and other discounts.

The presentation lasted less than fifteen minutes, but many students stayed after to take pictures with Kyndra.

Nick Rotondi (freshman-film and video) was one of the few male students in attendance.

"I was hoping to meet Kristin," he said. "I'm slightly disappointed."

Tom Hyde (freshman-mechanical engineering) said he came hoping to win a free spring break trip.

"It didn't work out for me tonight," he said.

Jason Jahn, PSMA assistant director of sales marketing, started the project at Penn State.

"I applied for a job with studentcity.com and became Penn State's campus manager," he said. "We needed student sponsorship so I contacted PSMA because this is their niche."

Jahn said PSMA will be promoting Student City on campus for the next month, distributing fliers and encouraging students to sign up for trips. Jahn said they hope to hold another information session but it will not be as big and it will not feature a surprise guest.
