This weekend, sidewalks throughout Pennsylvania and many other states hosted Penn State students participating in the first canning weekend for the 2007 Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon.

When Kathryn Sullivan was a child in the early 1950s, space was still an untraversed frontier. Only 30 years later, huge advancements in science would allow Sullivan to become the first American woman to walk in space.

The Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon overall committee may restructure motivational and fundraising events called "mini-Thons" that have become popular at commonwealth campuses in recent years.

The sky literally opened up for the five minutes that Lindsey Impagliazzo and Sameer Singh posted pictures and laid flowers at the intersection where their friend Richard Smith died Oct. 28.

Voting for the senior class gift opens to seniors today at the HUB-Robeson Center, other campus locations and online.

Passersby stopped and gathered near the information desk in the HUB-Robeson Center Friday night as members of RAM (Raw Aesthetic Movements) Squad began to bust break dance moves in the middle of the hallway.

Heritage Hall in the HUB-Robeson Center ditched its Penn State decor for blue and yellow balloons and tablecloths yesterday evening in celebration of the second annual Freedom Dinner.

Although Penn State students may be used to rising tuition costs each year, national trends suggest that financial aid won't be rising any time soon.

News in brief

SPORTS

The possibility of a letdown game was very real this weekend for the No. 3 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers, who were coming off their much-ballyhooed series with No. 4 Ohio University the previous weekend.

West Virginia and Drexel came to the Greenberg Ice Pavilion this weekend hoping to upset the Penn State ACHA Division Icers. Coming off two defensive struggles against Ohio, Penn State figured to open things up more offensively, but no one could have foreseen the Icers manhandling their opponents the way they did, routing the Mountaineers and Dragons by a combined score of 17-0.

If this weekend's scores suggested anything, the Penn State women's volleyball team may have extracted whatever positives it could from its first loss of the year one weekend earlier.

MADISON, Wisc. -- Tim Shaw let the air pass through his lips as he was seated after Saturday's game. He wanted to take a moment to find the words to describe how the team felt.

MADISON, Wisc. -- As if trying to tackle a greased pig, Penn State's offense this season frequently allows prime opportunities to slip out of its grasp.

MADISON, Wisc. -- Among the dark suits and dim lighting Saturday, a bright, neon blue cast stuck out in the Penn State interview room.

For the Penn State women's soccer team, beating Northwestern on Thursday in the Big Ten Tournament wasn't an accomplishment. It was a check mark.

Even after the celebration had subsided, senior midfielder Sarah Dwyer couldn't let go of the championship trophy. She entered the press conference, a smile beaming on her face, still clutching the glass treasure and placing it carefully on the table.

After Oct. 27's 1-0 victory against Iowa, Penn State field hockey coach Char Morett stared at the opposing team as it packed up. She couldn't help but praise the play of the Hawkeyes even though her team pulled out a close win.

The team was undefeated against the Indiana Hoosiers for more than two years. It was trying to bounce back from what can only be called a miserable regular season and defend its Big Ten conference title.
