Ruggers maintain win streak over Navy
Navy was ranked No. 2 coming into the game against No. 3 Penn State.

Anchors aweigh, my boys, anchors aweigh.

When all was said and done Saturday afternoon, it was the No. 3 Penn State men's rugby team sailing on to victory, not higher ranked No. 2 Navy.

With the 31-16 victory, Penn State won its fourth straight over Navy and wrapped up its third-consecutive Potomac River Union (PRU) division title.

"My first year up here they beat us, 19-17," said fifth-year senior Steve Wallick. "From there on, the last four times we've played them, we've beat them. They just want to win so bad, and they can't."

It didn't take long for the Ruggers to get on the board, as fullback Luke Roberts, perfect with his kicking duties on the day, connected on a 40-yard penalty in the third minute to put Penn State up, 3-0.

"I practiced a little extra, and I think what I'd been doing wrong over the past few weeks," said Roberts.

"After [Coach Ferrell] asked me for that 40 yarder at the beginning of the game, he was like, 'Can you hit this?' My mind was made up and I was like, 'Yes.' After I hit that first one, then the rest were easy."

The Ruggers added tries by Dylan Acker and Matt Miller en route to holding a 17-11 halftime lead, which was impressive considering they had to play for ten minutes without the help of All-American captain Auggie Manelick, who was yellow carded for a bone-crushing high hit on a Navy player that set the tone for the rest of the match.

At the start of the second half it was still anyone's game, and Navy's attack on offense didn't bode well for the Ruggers.

"They just had a lot of possession. We just tackled all day long," said Penn State assistant coach Terry Ryland. "I think when the score was 24-11, we were under pressure for a long time. They had about 13 or 14 recycles, and we just tackled, tackled, tackled."

It was then, with Navy's possession offense standing at the goal line, that Penn State put the game away.

With less than five minutes remaining, Roberts came through with yet another of the highlight reel tries he's been scoring all season.

Defensively, Penn State had Navy outnumbered on the left side when Roberts stepped into the play to mark his man when something caught the standout fullback's eye.

"I saw their 10, he was telegraphing that pass inside," said Roberts. "I faked back on the 12 and just stepped right through and took it."

Roberts proceeded to sprint the length of the field for the try that was ultimately the regular-season clinching play.

In a match that saw hard hitting defense throughout, as well as a Navy player get red carded for stomping on the back of Wallick's head, Penn State took advantage of Navy's mistakes.

"Overall I thought we had a pretty solid performance," Ferrell said. "We played a really tough side today, and for the most part we had it under control."

As for what Saturday's win means, the Ruggers are almost assured a rise in their ranking and will enter the spring MARFU playoffs as the top seed in the PRU division.

It also marks Penn State's second- consecutive undefeated regular season.

Navy still has matchups against division opponent George Mason and rival Army as it looks to secure the second seed in the PRU division.
