Doran's voting column immature in its nature

Kevin Doran's analysis of the rationale not to vote is sorely misguided.

He claims that American politics denies citizens true representation, where the only choice is between the "lesser of two evils."

How can he criticize the political system he is unwilling to be a part of?

I wonder if Kevin voted in the primaries, certainly one opportunity to choose a representative candidate. From his statements, it seems unlikely.

He mentions that elected officials constantly campaign, but elected officials must run for re-election. It is the very task that keeps them accountable, and Kevin's decision ensures that our politicians will continue ignoring the student vote.

Kevin suggests that students boycott the system, referring to his ability to boycott a McDonald's serving "half-cooked meat." There is a fundamental and fatal flaw in his logic. In government, if you choose not to participate you are still affected by policies put into place after Election Day.

As a consumer, if you don't buy a hamburger, McDonald's isn't going to cut the budget for higher education - those who you didn't elect will. Policies affect everyone, regardless of participation. On Nov. 7, Kevin can do his "civic duty and abstain," but students will have simply lost another voice.

You have two options. You can follow Kevin's immature view of a political system that he is too lazy to change, or you can join the rest of Penn State and vote to make our voices heard.
