News in brief

Alleged gun involved in Pollock fight

Penn State University Police, assisted by the State College Police Department, responded to a large fight in Pollock Commons that allegedly involved a gun Saturday. About 200 people attending a school dance exited the area, police said. No injuries were reported and no gun was found, police said.

Bar faces fine, one-day suspension

Tony's Big Easy, 129 S. Pugh St., will face a $600 fine and a one-day liquor license suspension for "happy hour" violations that allegedly occurred at the bar.

Sammark Inc., who co-owns Tony's Big Easy, received a citation this summer for three separate incidents that allegedly occurred in February at the location, which also includes Candy Bar and Lounge and Lulu's Nightspot, formerly known as Club Love.

Dennis Smolko, enforcement supervisor with the Pennsylvania Police and Bureau of Liquor Enforcement, said investigation of Tony's Big Easy began after the stabbing of Penn State senior Michael Donahue, who died of a puncture wound to the heart on Feb. 17. Sammark Inc. had reached a plea bargain with the Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement and the administrative law judge made his final decision regarding the terms of the plea bargain Friday, following about a week of review.

Police investigating reported burglary

The State College Police Department said it is investigating a burglary on a home construction site on Florence Way Friday night.

Police said $33,000 of equipment, including generators, a saw, an industrial scientific atmospheric monitor and other tools, was taken from the site. Police said they assume there are multiple burglars because of the extensive amount of construction equipment taken from the house and three trailers parked on the construction site. Police said they believe the assailants used a large truck or multiple trips to complete the task. There are currently no suspects.

PSU drops behind MSU in challenge

Although Penn State took an early lead in the Penn State-Michigan State Blood Donor Challenge, collecting 96 units the first day in comparison to Michigan State University's 85, Penn State has since dropped behind. Michigan State ended up with 656 units of blood while Penn State collected 385.

Wendi Keeler, American Red Cross field representative for Penn State and Red Cross Club adviser, said it is expected that Penn State has fallen behind because Michigan State has had more blood drives in the beginning, whereas Penn State plans to have larger drives in the final week.

Today's drives will held from 1 to 7 p.m. at Simmons Lounge in South Halls and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Deike Building.
