A Penn State student who allegedly assaulted a woman after throwing a blanket over her head Oct. 28 acknowledged Friday his involvement in the assaults of two female students in their dorm rooms during the summer, according to Penn State University Police.
David W. Cassada, 22, of 472 E. College Ave., was charged before District Justice Carmine Prestia for allegedly entering two unlocked dorm rooms in Haller and Cooper Halls at 4:30 a.m. and 5:18 a.m. July 11.
Cassada was arrested Nov. 1 for allegedly assaulting a female visitor as she entered a stairwell at University Gateway apartments, 616 E. College Ave. He is accused of throwing a blanket over the woman's head, throwing her to the ground and hitting her repeatedly.
Cassada told police he mistook the young woman for a friend and that his only intent was to scare her, according to court documents.
According to a university police press release, Cassada acknowledged his involvement in the July incidents to university police.
He was charged with burglary, criminal trespassing, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, terroristic threats, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and harassment in connection with the July incidents. His bail was set at $75,000.
The freshman who was allegedly attacked in Haller Hall told police this summer that she woke up to a man hovering over her. She said she clawed at the man's side while he held her mouth shut. He told her that he would kill her before covering her head with a sheet, taking $20 and running away, she said.
The woman in Cooper Hall also said she awoke to the assailant moving around the room and fought him off until he left.
University Police Assistant Director Tyrone Parham said in the summer that Cooper Hall was being used for a Penn State program for high school students at the time of the assaults. The woman who was allegedly attacked was a 20-year-old program employee who did not have a roommate and whose door was unlocked, he said.
Cassada was arrested after a bartender at Sharkie's Bar & Thrifty Bottle Shop, 110 Sowers St., said he recognized the man in the surveillance video photos released by the State College Police Department in connection with the University Gateway assault.
In addition to the charges stemming from the July incidents, Cassada was charged with simple assault, unlawful restraint, recklessly endangering another person and harassment and placed in Centre County Prison in lieu of $200,000 straight bail.
Cassada's preliminary hearing is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.
