Voting for the senior class gift opens to seniors today at the HUB-Robeson Center, other campus locations and online.
Voting will take place in various campus locations 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Online voting is also available, from 8 a.m. today to 5 p.m. Friday. Any student graduating in May, August or December is eligible to vote for the gift.
"It doesn't take much time to vote, just a couple of minutes," Laura Unger (senior-public relations), communications overall, said. Thirty to 35 original proposals were submitted. In the course of two meetings, the senior class gift ballot selection committee -- made up of students, faculty and administration -- narrowed the decision to three final proposals on which seniors can vote.
The proposals include creating a Celebration Garden at Rec Hall that would beautify the areas outside and celebrate events that have occurred there; beautifying the Allen Street Mall from Pattee Library to College Avenue as a modern continuation of the senior class gift from 1900 by adding new benches; and enhancing the Fisher Plaza in front of Kern and Chambers Buildings to make the area more student friendly.
Jordan Ford (senior-advertising), senior class gift committee overall, said the decision on final proposals was based on Office of Physical Plant research, existing university plans, construction time, feasibility, cost, representation of the senior class and university purpose. Unger said the difference between the proposals is the meaning and intention for each campus area.
Last year, about 3,000 seniors voted for the class gift; this year the overall committee said it hopes to increase the number of voters to about 4,000.
The winning gift will be announced at a press conference at 11 a.m. on Nov. 13.
