The sky literally opened up for the five minutes that Lindsey Impagliazzo and Sameer Singh posted pictures and laid flowers at the intersection where their friend Richard Smith died Oct. 28.
Snow flurried in the wind as Impagliazzo (senior-art education) pinned the pictures to Smith's makeshift memorial on the marquee just outside of Balfurd Cleaners, 320 W. Beaver Ave.
Smith was pronounced dead at Mount Nittany Medical Center last Saturday after he and Penn State student Aaron Stidd were hit by an alleged drunk driver as they crossed the intersection at Beaver Avenue and Atherton Street with Singh. Singh (junior-electrical engineering) was not injured, and Stidd remains in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Heather Strouse, who told police in an accident report that she witnessed the accident from her car, chatted with Impagliazzo and Singh about Smith as snow fell lightly on their memorial.
Impagliazzo said she encourages others who knew Smith to add to her memorial.
The weather conditions -- wet and overcast -- were similar to the night Smith and Stidd were hit by Anthony Torsell, 20, of Bellefonte, according to accident report.
Torsell (junior-kinesiology) had a blood alcohol level of .242 percent an hour after the accident, according to the State College Police Department.
Smith was a recent graduate of West Chester University and was working in Conshohocken as a network analyst, Impagliazzo said.
Smith's memorial services were held Saturday in West Chester.
Impagliazzo has said her and Smith's families spent their summers together in Chesapeake Bay, where his ashes will be spread after his cremation.
