Record, injuries mark loss to Wisconsin

Collegian Staff Writer

MADISON, Wisc. -- Penn State's defense limited Wisconsin, but -- once again -- the Nittany Lions' offense couldn't construct any touchdown drives.

The Lions haven't scored a passing touchdown in nine quarters and managed just a field goal against Wisconsin. With the 13- 3 loss against the Badgers earlier today, a Capital One Bowl is a virtual impossibility.

The defense forced two turnovers, but the offense didn't capitalize and didn't score any points off an interception and fumble by Wisconsin quarterback John Stocco.

In the second quarter, one play after Sean Lee recovered Stocco's fumble on the Wisconsin 22-yard line, Anthony Morelli tossed an interception.

That was the story much of the day, as the Lions couldn't convert -- they didn't once hold the ball in the red zone.

Penn State's running game was grounded most of the day, as Tony Hunt ran for only 35 yards on 11 carries. Anthony Morelli ended a so-so performance by going 19-for-35 with 165 yards and a pick.

Paterno injured, flying back

Joe Paterno suffered an injury to his left leg in the second quarter of today's game and is in the midst of flying to State College with director of athletic medicine Wayne Sebastianelli, according to assistant athletic director Jeff Nelson.

Paterno will be X-rayed this evening and will undergo an MRI likely tomorrow or Monday.

"That's all we know about his condition at this point," Nelson said.

Quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno and offensive coordinator Galen Hall continued to call the offensive plays after Paterno left. Initially, defensive coordinator Tom Bradley said, they attempted to communicate with the 79-year-old head coach via headset -- but that violated NCAA rules, so he was forced to take the headset off.

Paterno left the game with a brace on his left leg in the third quarter. He was carted off with his leg propped up on the hood.

"He's not going anywhere," Bradley said. "He's pretty tough."

Posluszny sets new tackle recored

With his tackle of Wisconsin tight end Travis Beckum, Penn State senior linebacker Paul Posluszny notched his ninth stop of the day and the 344th of his career -- making him the program's all-time leader.

The tackle moves him ahead of linebacker Greg Buttle.

Posluszny's takedown came on a third-and-5 pass up the middle, stopping Beckum just shy of the first down marker. The Badgers went for it and converted on the ensuing fourth down. The drive led to a Wisconsin touchdown.
