Ricardo Torres, the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Academic Assembly president, will keep his seat in Faculty Senate if University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) President Jay Chamberlin gets his way.
UPUA has until Faculty Senate's Dec. 5 meeting to appoint a representative. "I'm offering Ricardo Torres the position in Faculty Senate if he is made an at-large member of UPUA," Chamberlin said. "He held that position for USG. I know he's very interested in keeping it."
Torres said he was originally disappointed when it was announced on Oct. 25 that he would not be able to complete his second year as Senate representative.
"I was hoping to get it back," he said. "When Jay Chamberlin heard what had happened he told me there was a possibility I could get the seat through UPUA."
If chosen by UPUA as an at-large member at any of their next meetings, Torres said he hopes to become the academic affairs chairman. Torres said getting his seat back will allow him to make peace between USG and UPUA.
"It's a good opportunity to mediate between the two organizations," he said.
Nick Stathes, USG president, said he is also thrilled to see Torres have the opportunity continue representing academics. "It's a very nice gesture by [Chamberlin]," he said. "I am really happy to hear that. [Torres] knew how to do his job and do it well."
Torres said some members of USG may perceive his double-membership as an issue.
Continuing the remainder of his term in USG, Torres said it is too early to tell which organization will get his priority in the future. "My main concern is influencing academic concerns," he said. "Wherever I have the opportunity to do that, I will stay. I can do both if they both have the ability to make a difference. That's where my passion is."
