Local band to be heard nationally

Collegian Staff Writer

State College band Cloverleaf will be heard by a national audience tonight when its music is used in the mtvU Woodie Awards. The band was one of six college groups whose music was selected for use during the awards show, set to air tonight on mtvU at 8.

"It'll not only be played on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU, but they said since we're one of the four bands out of thousands and thousands of bands that submitted, that they're gonna send our stuff to major labels," Cloverleaf vocalist T.J. Cornwall (sophomore-mechanical engineering) said. Shortened reruns of the music channel's award show are to be played on MTV Nov. 4 and on MTV2 Nov. 5, according to MTV's Web site.

The band received an e-mail from mtvU because it was on the mailing list after reaching the quarterfinals in the mtvu Best Music on Campus Contest last spring. Drummer Garrett Bogden (sophomore-marketing) said mtvU asked for songs with at least 30 seconds of instrumental music, and the band submitted "226 Miles" and "My Rocker" as their submissions.

Jason Rzepka, manager of communications for mtvU, said though the channel has never used college music to this level before, it makes sense to play college music from college bands.

"The core of mtvU on the whole is about being committed to the amazing music made by college students," Rzepka said.

Rzepka said mtvU wants to be a major platform to help college bands succeed on a larger scale, and that college students are on the forefront of music, art and political activism, among other things.

Guitarist Ted Molnar (sophomore-biobehavioral health) said the two songs are fan favorites.

"The responses that we've been getting from different people have been telling us those are the favorite songs," Molnar said.

Cornwall said the band also represented its sound well.

"I kind of look at ["My Rocker"] like the Cloverleaf anthem, if you will," Cornwall said. "It's hard rock enough, and it's kind of '90s rock and has the piano, then it has the guitar solo, the catchy chorus. It just has everything you could possibly need in a song."

The other selection, "226 Miles," has also received radio play in Pittsburgh.

"[The music will] be used for bumpers in and out of commercials; it'll play as presenters take the stage and during the closing credits," Rzepka said.

The band is not sure about the exact details of how much or which of their songs will be used, though.

"They said the best way to find out would be to tune in and watch, and definitely one would be featured, or maybe both," Bogden said.

Because mtvU is only carried on college campuses, the band members said they would have to go over to Molnar's dorm to watch it, because he is the only one who still lives on campus. Bogden said he'll be at the All-American Rejects concert during the show and will have to catch a rerun.

"I know the rest of the band is having a Woodie award-watching party. I really wanted to see the Format, so..." Bogden said, then laughed. "I guess my priorities are mixed up a little bit."
