Showalter to host local comedy show

Collegian Staff Writer

Tomorrow night is a night for laughs as Michael Showalter of Wet Hot American Summer and Stella hosts the Student Comedy Extravaganza in the HUB-Robeson Center's Alumni Hall.

The event will feature stand-up comedy, musical comedy and student films.

The show is sponsored by Students Organizing the Multiple Arts (SOMA) and the Full Ammo Improv Troupe.

SOMA President Danny Greene (junior-information sciences and technology) said in addition to hosting the show, Showalter will also perform 20 to 25 minutes of standup.

Getting Showalter as emcee for the show has been something the group has been working on for awhile now, he said.

"We were trying to get him for awhile," Greene said. "We were looking for somebody that kind of knew what we were going to do."

The performers of the comedy show have a wide range of experience, Greene said.

Greene said the show will have small-time spots for students that haven't had as much experience as others, but also a graduate student will be performing who's been doing comedy since he was an undergrad.

"A lot of people are well-versed," Greene said. "It's a nice mix."

Not all of the performers in the comedy show are from Penn State.

Jeff Kornberg (junior-English), president of Full Ammo Improv, said several students from Rutgers University will do comedy acts.

Kornberg said Shayna Ferm, a hit in the New York comedy scene, and Rob Paravonian, who was on Comedy Central's Premium Blend, will also be performing.

Kornberg will be one of the musical comedians in the show.

He said musical comedy is a form of standup that provides the audience with humor and melody.

"Musical comedy focuses on creative lyrics about topics not normally explored in mainstream songs," he said.

Jeffrey Carton (senior-film and English), a student filmmaker, will present one of his works at the show. Carton said one scene of the film consists of the Easter Bunny stealing Santa Claus' hat, and a chase ensues.

"We started filming in October and constantly turning the heads of bystanders who were asking us what the hell we were doing," Carton said.

Carton has also been developing a TV series for the past eight months called Haunted Destinations, which focuses on ghost hunters themselves rather than looking for evidence of the supernatural.

Michael Skurko (junior-meteorology) is one of the comedians who will perform in the comedy show.

Skurko said his sense of humor is mainly about observation.

"Without revealing too much, I like to poke fun at TV commercials," he said. "I am also seeking a career as a TV weatherman, so I have heard plenty of jokes about that in my days."

Skurko has done comedy at several open mic nights before, but he said he is very excited to find out what a performance at a full Alumni Hall would be like.

"Some of the open mic nights I've been at only have five other people, so there is no energy and the volume of laughter is pretty low," he said. "When you get 50 people, the laughter is naturally louder with more people, so you feel more confident on stage."
