NEWS
[ Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006 ]

Local businesses are doing all they can to cash in on the rush of students willing to spend big bucks for that full Flavor Flav costume this Halloween.

Most partygoers make a conscious effort to avoid being arrested while out on the town -- but when "Officer Nasty" is slapping on the handcuffs, there aren't many complaints.

The operators of the C5 Fitness, 1510 Martin St., were forced to close its doors at noon Friday because of a debt of more than $1 million in unpaid rent, the Centre County sheriff said.

Civic slackers better get their acts together -- the deadline for submitting an application for an absentee ballot to vote in the Nov. 7 elections is at 5 p.m. today.

While Penn State students celebrate Halloween tonight, many might not remember the girl who disappeared on the same night five years ago.

The former Penn State football player who has been called a "person of interest" in the June murder of student Langston Carraway is no longer facing a drug-related charge in Centre County, though the commonwealth said it plans to refile.

Witnesses said a Penn State student accused of killing a visitor and critically injuring a student was driving between 50 and 60 mph without headlights Saturday when he struck two pedestrians in the crosswalk of Beaver Avenue and Atherton Street, according to a criminal complaint.

Penn State announced yesterday that the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon for 2007 has officially been shortened to 46 hours, two hours less than its traditional 48 hours.

With a week left until Election Day, Gov. Ed Rendell will visit Penn State today to drum up support for the Democratic Party and encourage students to vote.

The wind whipped around the building underneath the quarter moon, just a pale light in the dark, Sunday night sky -- days before Hallow's Eve.

At the sound of a pager, Michael Breen has had to drop dinner, jump out of the shower and even leave class to put out fires.

News in Brief

"I have many talents, but I think I will either walk on my hands or sew something for the pageant," said Doug Adler (freshman-advertising) as he sat with friends in the waiting room.

SPORTS

After a seven-hour drive to Massachusetts, the Penn State ACHA Division II Ice Lions had only one goal in mind: A victory against Holy Cross.

The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams had an impressive showing at Temple this weekend as each placed several fencers in top ten ranks, including first place.

As Saturday's game between Penn State and Purdue was ending, Nittany Lion defensive end Josh Gaines hadn't given his partisan sector of the crowd much to cheer about.

Ed DeChellis has spent the past three years trying to convince Penn State fans that a sport played with a round, orange ball can be as appealing as one that uses a pointed, brown one.

Dennis Hohenshelt sat on a couch inside an unlit room in the Penn State women's volleyball office yesterday, a laptop resting on his knees.

As the buzzer echoed off the walls of the Greenberg Ice Pavilion, Nick Signet stood perfectly still in the crease that he had successfully defended for two days.

This was not the senior season that Jean Rettig had envisioned.

Despite Virginia's solid defensive line, the Penn State Lady Ruggers came out on top once again, defeating the Cavaliers 12-8 in a close match at the Mason Dixon Tournament in Annapolis on Sunday.

Without seeing it, this game would appear to be nothing more than a typical pick-up game of basketball. There were two standout stars on opposing teams. Players hustled to every loose ball. The most exciting moments came on fast breaks. There were argued calls, hard collisions and lots of trash talking.

On Oct. 24, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) released its biennial report stating that humans are using natural resources at an unprecedented rate. According to the report, unless humans decrease their use of natural resources by 2050, they will significantly overshoot earth's capacity and will be using double the amount of available resources such as energy, food and oil.

An apple a day used to keep the doctor away.

Twenty minutes may seem like forever when sprinting 6.5 mph on the treadmill -- but is the fitness center time limit enough heart-pumping cardio to reap any benefits?

Think employers don't research potential job applicants on Facebook, MySpace and other Internet networking sites?

Listening to your iPod at full blast before an 8 a.m. class may wake you up, but new studies show long-term problems can arise from overuse of MP3 players.

Every weekend, students indulge in colas that cover up the Captain, but these carbonated confections can have harmful effects.

Although a student may have 400 friends on Facebook, recent studies are showing close friendships among Americans are declining, especially among men.
