My Opinion
Seniors deserve better

Flip through the Penn State men's soccer team's media guide and search for the word "senior" next to a player's name.

It's almost like a "Where's Waldo?" book in that you have to look hard to actually find one.

Of the 26 players on the Nittany Lions' (6-10-2, 3-3 Big Ten) roster, four names are listed as seniors, far less than any other team in the Big Ten.

These four seniors have seen it all. Losing streaks, winning streaks and tournament runs.

But for Markku Viitanen, David Gray, Jeff Chambers and Simon Omekanda, after all they have been through, the four seniors, they deserve a sendoff fitting of their careers.

They came in as a group the year after the Lions won their second Big Ten title and were on a team that some would consider to be rebuilding.

Throughout their tenure, each has had his moments and could be playing for the last time this upcoming weekend in the Big Ten Tournament.

David Gray is a player that steadily puts in a strong performance on both sides of the ball every game.

Moving to a forward position in recent games, Gray has two goals in his last four contests.

"David Gray would run through brick walls for you," Penn State coach Barry Gorman once said. "You get 100 percent from him every game."

The defensive starter spoke earlier in the year, after an intra-squad scrimmage, of how he loved to shoot the ball in practice and wanted to do so more in games.

With the injuries to four of the Lions' forwards this season, he has stepped up in every way possible, lately scoring off of headers from corner kicks.

The player setting those corner kicks for Gray's goals has been Jeff Chambers.

To watch Chambers on the field is to watch a player compete and leave all of his energy and emotions there.

It is common to see Chambers limp before and after games, but during he gives it all and seems to let his competitive nature and emotional play make his body forget how battered it may be.

After the team's big win against Indiana this season, no player was more emotional after the game than Chambers.

Though he had an ice pack on his leg, you could see what that win meant to him as a senior.

Chambers started off the year wearing the captain's band on his arm while team captain Markku Viitanen was out with an injury.

Viitanen's return this season has been a testament to his career, in that he has been a starter since his freshman year.

The Lions' captain has kept the defense steady and is one reason why the injured team has managed to stay so close in games.

"Definitely we are going to go to the Big Ten," Viitanen said. "Definitely we are going to bring it home."

A repeat title would be the only fitting send off for these players -- especially Simon Omekanda.

To see Omekanda set up a play is like watching a sculptor plan out his next masterpiece.

He seems to be a step or two ahead of every player on the field most of the time.

At times this season, Omekanda has seen frustrated with his team's play and has struggled to find a way to remedy it.

But the All-Big Ten forward knows that he needs to put the ball in the net if his team stands any chance of winning in the Big Ten tournament.

A Big Ten title repeat would be the fitting finale of these four careers, and if the Lions finally put everything together in the tournament, a championship is a definite possibility.

Though it is easier to find a senior than Waldo in the books, experience is something these four can teach the 22 other players on the team.

The leadership is certainly there, all the team has to do is follow in their footsteps to succeed this weekend.
