If the late-night Loop at Penn State is cut from the services offered by CATA, as is explained in "CATA may cut late-night Loop" (Oct. 27) the students will have a fit. When you actually think about how many inebriated students rely on the Loop to get them safely back to their residences because they are too sloppy to walk and will probably end up passing out in a bush somewhere along the way, it is almost overwhelming.
The article also explains that the reason for the cuts is that there is not enough federal funding to support the service on weekends (which was deemed the least necessary along with evenings during the week). Funding is based on population rather than the actual usage of the service.
But what I don't understand is, doesn't Penn State have 40,000 students here? Not to mention all of the other thousands of people who live in State College who are not students.
The reduction in services is planned to begin in the spring and I have a feeling that if this does indeed occur, then there will be many more injuries from accidents reported because of the people who are so smashed that they can't even stand.
