News in Brief

Woman reports alleged rape Sunday

A woman reported to the State College Police Department Sunday at about noon that she was raped by an unknown male while spending Saturday night at a friend's apartment on the 300 block of East Beaver Avenue. The woman was treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center for unknown injuries.

The incident is still under investigation, and police said they could not release further details at this time.

Robbed bank returns to business

Reliance Bank, 1824 S. Atherton St., is back to business after a robbery Friday afternoon, when an unknown armed man entered the bank and took an undisclosed amount of money.

The State College Police Department and the State College FBI are working "very closely" to analyze evidence and witness testimony to piece together what happened at about 3 p.m. Friday, said Jerri Williams, spokesperson for Philadelphia division of the FBI. She said there is no new information to release and would not confirm if police have any suspects.

The suspect was described as wearing a dark baseball cap, round-rimmed sunglasses, a dark jacket and blue jeans at the time of incident, according to the press release. Police added that the man appeared to have long gray hair and a gray mustache, which may have been a disguise.

State College Police Department is asking anyone with information to contact them at 234-7150 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-877-992-7463.

Plea bargain decision not reached

A judge has yet to make a decision regarding the plea bargain agreement for Sammark Inc., owner of Tony's Big Easy, 129 S. Pugh St., following several "happy hour" violations the company received.

The approval of the plea bargain was supposed to be confirmed Friday by the office of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, but as of yesterday, no decision had been finalized. A decision is expected by the end of the week.

Sammark Inc. received a citation this summer for three separate incidents that allegedly occurred in February at the location, which also includes Candy Bar and Lounge and Lulu's Nightspot, formerly known as Club Love.

Dennis Smolko, enforcement supervisor with the Pennsylvania Police and Bureau of Liquor Enforcement, said the range of fines the judge can enforce varies from $50 to $1,000. He also said it is possible that Tony's Big Easy might face a liquor license suspension rather than a fine.

Candidates nominated for IFC board

Candidates were nominated for the top three executive board positions on the Interfraternity Council (IFC) at last night's President's Council meeting in the Sigma Pi house.

The nominations for 2007 IFC president were Steve Hulick, a member of Phi Gamma Delta and IFC vice president of standards, and Grant Miller, Delta Kappa Epsilon president and IFC vice president of membership.

Frank Keller, Kappa Alpha president and IFC university relations chairman, and Randy Burns, Acacia Bischoff chairman, were nominated for the board's executive vice president position.

The sole nomination for vice president of finance was Dan Hadas, Sigma Phi Epsilon president.

The elections to decide who will serve in these IFC executive capacities for 2007 will take place at the next council meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
