Police said the Penn State student accused of killing a visitor and critically injuring a student was driving between 50 and 60 miles per hour without headlights Saturday when he struck two pedestrians in the crosswalk of Beaver Avenue and Atherton Street, according to a criminal complaint. The speed limit on that section of South Atherton is 35 miles per hour.

Strong winds forced the Penn State Sailing Club to cancel the Nittany Lion Open at Prince Gallitzin State Park on Saturday.

Yesterday, Elvis, Batman and the Cat in the Hat got in the spirit of the Interfraternity Council/Pan-hellenic Dance Marathon (Thon)outside of the Intramural Building to prepare for the sixth annual Thon 5k.

At the 1972 Munich Olympics, the Israeli team was attacked and taken hostage by a group of Palestinian terrorists who eventually killed all of their captives. Dan Alon -- an Israeli fencer -- escaped the attack, but not the heartache of collecting the belongings of his slain teammates.

About 300 people gathered at the corner of North Atherton Street and White Course Drive in wind and sporadic rain yesterday to benefit victims of abuse in Centre County.

Although many Penn State students claim to bleed blue and white, that legend will be put to the test as the annual Penn State-Michigan State Blood Donor Challenge begins today.

Internationally known flute player Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia took the stage at Schwab Auditorium last night to play an Indian classical music concert that, even after two hours, ended with calls for an encore.

When Anuradha Mangalgiri (sophomore-aerospace engineering) left India to come to Penn State, it was the first time she had ever been outside the country. A year later, Mongalgiri says she still misses India but enjoys opportunities to connect with her culture.

Standing in the second-floor hallway of the Willard Building on Saturday afternoon, one was just as likely to eavesdrop on an impromptu freestyle rap battle as a discussion of non-traditional ways of "getting out the vote" this November.

Not every seat at the Bryce Jordan Center was filled for the Toby Keith concert Saturday night, but once Keith got onto the stage, he did his best to sell out.

A Penn State student driving under the influence of alcohol early Saturday morning struck two men, killing a visitor and critically injuring a Penn State student, near the intersection of Atherton Street and Beaver Avenue, police reported.

An armed man suspected of robbing a State College bank Friday afternoon is still on the run, and police have yet to name a suspect or confirm any leads.

News in brief

SPORTS

After Indiana's huddle of celebration was over, one player was seen squatting on the ground, with her head in her hands. It was the only reaction senior Annelise Legel could've had after her last game at AstroTurf Field ended with the opposing team celebrating.

Yesterday was a day of firsts and for the No. 7 Penn State field hockey team, none of them were good.

It was a sluggish finish for the Penn State men's cross country team yesterday, as they hung on to the second-to-last spot, placing No.9 at the Big Ten Championship hosted by Indiana University.

When it comes to golf, there's a fine line between a great round and a not-so-great round. A couple of inches can be the difference between a birdie and a double-bogey or worse. Walking that fine line can be risky and when a golfer falls off the line, the results can be disheartening.

Going into the Big Ten Championships yesterday, the Penn State women's cross country team knew it had to put in its best performance of the season just to compete.

So this is what defeat looks like. No smiling, no clapping, no cheering. Blank stares all around.

Ohio University strolled into Happy Valley on Friday as the hottest team in the country thanks to its opportunistic power play. It left Saturday night with a bruised ego and two blemishes on its record, thanks to the suffocating penalty kill of the Penn State ACHA Division I Icers.

Whenever Penn State and Ohio get together on the ice, it's always a tough hockey game.

A regular season full of injuries, ineptitude and untimely, bad luck is finally over for the Penn State men's soccer team.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Tony Hunt was the final Penn State player to leave the field Saturday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Leave it to Paul Posluszny to find some fault in a stellar effort.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno greeted his protégé with a pat on the back after the game, while Anthony Morelli tucked his arm around the coach's back. The two walked to the locker room like that, exchanging words and a few laughs.

Penn State men's rugby head coach Don Ferrell wasn't with his team Saturday morning leading up to its game against No. 15 Ohio State.

Before their series with Buffalo this weekend, Lady Icers head coach Michael Brinton said that the games with Buffalo offered his team a chance to set the tone for the rest of the season.

For the Penn State men's water polo team, this past weekend at the McCoy Natatorium presented a chance to win the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament and gain a bid to nationals.

For the Penn State men's swimming and diving team, success is found not only in the individual swimmers and divers, but the team as a whole. There was no shortage of success this past weekend as the Nittany Lions put up impressive numbers in Charlottesville, Va.

Dominance.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Paul Posluszny trotted off the field with a grass-stained helmet by his side, not once stopping to smile and take in the sights.
