Men's swimmers find success in Charlottesville

Collegian Staff Writer

For the Penn State men's swimming and diving team, success is found not only in the individual swimmers and divers, but the team as a whole. There was no shortage of success this past weekend as the Nittany Lions put up impressive numbers in Charlottesville, Va.

Sophomore Tim Williams finished fourth in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 200 butterfly, while Junior Kyle Miranda took home third in the 100 breaststroke. Both the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, made up of junior Sean Swanepoel, senior Dan Kaiserian, and sophomores Spencer Maglich and Vincent Raydams, finished third.

Sophomore Pat Schirk, who captured first in the 200 backstroke, highlighted the first night for the men.

The second day brought even more success for the Lions, who again put up impressive finishes, including another first place finish by Schirk.

Schirk won the 100 backstroke race, and teammate sophomore David Kraft finished third in the 1000 freestyle match. Miranda finished third in his 200 breaststroke match, while freshman Ben Ryan took fifth in the 1000 freestyle match.

The relay team of Kaiserian, Schirk, Rydams, and Swanepoel placed a respectful fourth in the 400 relay, and junior Sean Biedermann captured sixth in the 200 free.

Williams completed a successful tournament for the Lions, as he took second in the 400 individual medley, completing a third top-five finish for him at the event.

The Lions as a team fell short to each school, losing 201-152 to Clemson, 229-124 to Virginia, and 189.5-163.5 to Virginia Tech. The team will not have a tournament next weekend, but will begin to prepare towards their next match, a November 10-11 clash with in Indiana against Utah, Georgia, Louisville, and host Purdue.
