Letter to the Editor
School, theater group need communication

This is in response to the Venues article, "Urinetown, The Musical" (Oct. 25).

Cary Libkin is 100 percent correct about Urinetown in the Venues article.

The roles are great for college students, and who wouldn't want to see a show with that title?

This is exactly why the Penn State Thespians voted last year to produce the show this spring.

At the time, no local group was planning to produce the show anytime soon.

However, a week after deciding to do the show, we were notified that the School of Theatre would be producing it this fall.

While it is the School of Theatre's prerogative to pre-empt us on the rights for the show, Thespians recognizes that this situation is indicative of a larger issue on campus, the relationships among theater groups.

The relationships between student-run theatre groups and the university on a whole need to be improved.

We urge students to continue to support student theatre at Penn State in all its forms, from The Rocky Horror Show and No Refund Theatre's I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change to the regular Outlaws performances.

Help us remind the university that student theatre is an important creative outlet for students of all majors.

Without audiences and support, theatre will find a stage, but no home.

Nick Semon
vice president of Thespians
