Letter to the Editor
kla. school defense should be considered

My response to the Collegian editorial "School shootings: Textbook used as shields is a faulty plan," (Oct. 25) is, yes, I think that if the idea of textbooks used as shields works, it should be implemented.

However, one might ask whether it should be the only line of defense.

No, it should not. But, it will sure help.

No one knows how they will react in these situations.

But, if they had anything, such as a textbook, to protect them, give it to them.

The idea may sound simple, but the kids carry them to all of the classes.

I think the only thing scary is that we have to go to the extremes to protect our children from their own classmates.

I think the idea is to make the books out of the material Keviar, the material used to make bulletproof vests.

In response to the argument that the shootings are rare, tell that to a person who has a child in high school or tell it to a parent who has lost a child in a school shooting. The fact is that it has happened and it can happen to any school.

I live in a small town and threats of killings and bomb threats happen here just like anywhere else.

I say anyone who disregards an idea that could help save lives, whether the idea sounds ridiculous or not, is lazy and irresponsible.

I say if Oklahoma has a way of keeping our children safer while they attend school, send it to Texas. We would be interested.
