A Penn State student driving under the influence of alcohol early Saturday morning struck two men, killing a visitor and critically injuring a Penn State student, near the intersection of Atherton Street and Beaver Avenue, police reported.
Anthony S. Torsell, 20, of State College, was driving south on South Atherton Street at about 2:30 a.m. Friday in a Buick Skylark when he hit Aaron C. Stidd, 20, and Richard Smith, 21, who were crossing South Atherton Street westbound, according to a State College Police Department press release.
Stidd and Smith were both transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center, where Smith, of Conshohocken, was pronounced dead, according to the press release.
Centre County Chief Deputy Coroner Judy Pleskonko issued a press release Saturday that said an autopsy revealed that Smith died of blunt force trauma to the head. The release stated that the manner of death was accidental.
Stidd, a Penn State student from Huntingdon, was transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Officials confirmed yesterday that Stidd is in critical condition in the adult intensive care unit.
According to a press release, Torsell's blood alcohol level at the time of the arrest was .242 percent. The release states that Torsell was also in possession of a fake driver's license that stated he was over 21 years old. The legal limit for a 20-year-old driver is .02 percent, according to the press release.
According to a press release, Torsell was placed under arrest and charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor -- homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence and driving under the influence.
State College Police Sgt. John Wilson said the accident is still under investigation and an accident reconstruction team, along with detectives, is trying to piece together what happened.
Until then, he said no further specifics on the incident can be released.
Aaron's grandfather, Rozell Stidd, said yesterday that Aaron suffered two broken legs, severe head trauma and possible brain damage.
"He has never regained consciousness," Rozell Stidd said. "His vital signs are stable. The same as they were when they brought him in."
Rozell Stidd said his son, Aaron's father, told him doctors expect to know how he would progress in the next day or two.
Stidd is a junior majoring in business administration and a fraternity brother at Delta Upsilon, 299 Locust Lane.
Penn State student Lindsey Impagliazzo said Smith was a recent graduate of West Chester University and was working in Conshohocken as a network analyst.
Impagliazzo said her and Smith's families spent their summers together in Chesapeake Bay, where his ashes will be spread after his cremation.
She added that memorial services have not been scheduled for Smith.
Impagliazzo said Smith's family was unaware of his trip to Penn State this weekend and does not think Smith knew Stidd.
Rozell Stidd also said he was under the impression that the two pedestrians just happened to be crossing the street at the same time.
Sarah McLaughlin (sophomore-economics) said she was walking home in the rain Saturday morning about a block and a half from Alpha Fire Station, 400 W. Beaver Ave., where she said she heard a loud collision.
"I wouldn't have noticed the car if I didn't hear the bang," McLaughlin said. "The impact was really, really loud."
McLaughlin said the right sock and shoe of one of the men landed about 15 feet away from his body.
"He was face down," she said. "There was blood everywhere."
McLaughlin said as paramedics flipped the man over, the rain washed the blood from his face and she said it was apparent that his face, head and chest were badly injured.
McLaughlin also said that she noticed many people running toward the other side of the street, several feet away, to another body.
Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said if convicted, Torsell could spend anywhere between three and 10 years in prison for one count of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, plus an additional six to 14 months for aggravated assault with a vehicle while driving under the influence.
Torsell was arraigned before Centre County District Judge Carmine Prestia and placed in Centre County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail.
