Lions can win conference despite sub-.500 record
Penn State needs a win to keep its title hopes alive.

Collegian Staff Writer

With a record of 6-9-2, a shot at winning the Big Ten conference for any team would seem dismal at best.

But the Penn State men's soccer team actually has a chance to pull off the improbable in its final game of the season tomorrow night and could actually win the Big Ten regular season title.

If the Nittany Lions (6-9-2, 3-2 Big Ten) beat Michigan tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Indiana ties Wisconsin tonight, then Penn State would win the Big Ten regular season title outright.

With no more non-conference games on the schedule, the Lions are concentrating solely on their regular season finale at Michigan and the Big Ten tournament the following week at Ohio State.

Penn State coach Barry Gorman hopes that his players do not take the double-overtime loss to No. 13 Lehigh on Wednesday night as a letdown but as a warmup for the tougher teams ahead.

He hopes that his team keeps its head up and moves past the loss.

"They have to," Gorman said. "They are 3-2 in the Big Ten and to get a win there then we're 4-2 going into Big Tens."

In the beginning of the season with a team depleted by injuries, a chance at winning the Big Ten title seemed a distant dream.

Even having a chance with four forwards out all season including All-Big Ten sophomore Jason Yeisley playing in just a handful of games, shows that the Lions have "soldiered on" as Gorman commonly refers to his team's play.

The players also know that they have to forget this loss if they want a positive outcome to the end of the season.

"Well you know what? We just have to make sure we pick it up," junior Geordie MacNeill said. "It all comes down to the Big Tens so we have to step it up there."

Winning this game and the Big Ten title would be something that in preseason seemed as a definite possibility with two All-Big Ten forwards and a defense returning a majority of its starters.

But MacNeill knows the importance to this one game that ends the regular season.

"That's basically what we have to do," MacNeill. "It's a must-win game."

This season comes down to two games, and the Lions can only control one of the outcomes.

With a tie and a win, Gorman's patience and faith in his team all season could have a positive outcome.

The Lions will be watching the scoreboards Friday night to see the outcome of the Indiana versus Wisconsin game and with a win could wake up Sunday morning Big Ten champions.

Gorman wanted to reiterate the fact that his team still has a chance to his team and complete a season that at different times seemed lost.
