You thought Jay Bundy pushed the envelope?
Well UPUA's new president Jay Chamberlin can mix things up as well.
During UPUA's first official meeting last week, the members discussed having UPUA-themed thongs, holding future meetings at Mad Mex and possibly holding a retreat in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Sure, most of these things were talked about jokingly.
However, if Chamberlin's goal is to set up an organized and efficient governing body that will represent our students, wouldn't he want to start off his first meeting talking about official business?
First meetings in any organization, especially a new one, should set the tone for the rest of the year or term.
The only tone this UPUA meeting set was a nonsense one.
If they want to be taken seriously, they should act seriously.
We are not saying that all meetings should be strictly formal and without any humor.
Actually there should always be humor in meetings to make things more interesting and enjoyable.
However, there is a thin line between throwing a joke here and there and just talking nonsense the whole meeting and insulting faculty you will be working with.
Oh, yes. After a UPUA representative asked who Felicia McGinty, the group's adviser, was, Chamberlin gave her a lovely title to be remembered as.
"She's one of Vicky Triponey's minions," Chamberlin said at the meeting.
We've said before we don't want UPUA to be completely tied to the administration.
But if they have an administration adviser, a little respect could help.
As if that wasn't bad enough, UPUA vice president Mitch Belding said someone should put a shock collar on Chamberlin for the "minion" comment.
Shock collars, thongs, minions. These were the things our new student leaders discussed at their first meeting. What are we to expect when it comes time for them to make decisions for the entire student body?
Maybe their first meeting should have been used to set their credibility, not ruin any chance they had of passing as a credible student group.
