I found the opinion "Paternoville assault story presents blurry information" (Oct. 23) by Trevor Cowser very offensive. Mr. Cowser automatically assumed that the sexual assault was falsely reported and thus cast a negative light on Paternoville and ultimately Penn State. This in itself is unacceptable. Unfortunately, due to Mr. Cowser's opinion many women do not report their sexual assault for fear of the "negative implications." It is inconsequential what the negative or positive effects sexual assault reporting may or may not cause. It is, however, essential that all women feel safe in their environment, specifically Penn State.
If all of the men take this stance, how many women will fail to report their sexual assault? How many will be raped and battered? I apologize if this sounds harsh, Mr. Cowser, but Paternoville can not hold a flame to a woman's safety. If the whole event has to be torn down to promote women's security then that just may have to be the case. Furthermore, if this is not something you are willing to deal with, perhaps you should ask yourself as a man, "What can I do to help prevent violence against women?"
"How can I be a positive role model to other men?"
Whether you believe it or not, the problem stops with you.
