Understanding makes world less 'corrupt'
This letter is in response to Julia Hinckley's letter ("Reader says perversions don't belong in classroom," Oct. 24). What is sinful about one adult loving another adult? I'm growing tired of people using the guise of religion and their belief about what is sinful to support continued discrimination and prejudice against fellow human beings. If you agree with Ms. Hinckley about the "perversion" of same-sex relationships, first draw the line between love and the intimate act of sex. A relationship is defined by much more than just sex. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of us would not want our sex lives to be exposed in public. However, to varying degrees we expose the general public to our love for another person with whom we're in a relationship by holding hands, kissing, etc. While those acts may make some uncomfortable, that's hardly any fault of our own. Never before have I told a child a fairy-tale ending with a love story and gone into any detail on what Prince Charming and Cinderella planned to do next in their bedroom while the wicked stepsisters were out getting groceries. I'd also be willing to bet that children make no inferences to the like. What they do understand is that the two people love each other and that their love makes them happy. I highly doubt that message is corrupting our children, as Ms. Hinckley suggests. We can't choose to love someone or not. I encourage you to take an opportunity to understand that which you oppose before making suggestions for changing the world, and let what happens behind bedroom doors happen in peace. In the meantime, if we can teach our children to be a little more accepting and understanding than we are, the world will be a lot less "corrupt." Dex Tuttle
