[ Monday, Oct. 23, 2006 ]
enerations of Penn Staters demonstrated their school pride at an alumni ice cream social Friday through familiar chants, blue and white decorations, and an appearance by the Nittany Lion.

Guion "Guy" Bluford, homecoming grand marshal and the first African American in space, intended to be the first grand marshal to hold his own meet and greet with students on Friday afternoon.

On Oct. 15, the night he was confirmed as president of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA), Jay Chamberlin said he wanted UPUA to be fully functional within a month.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, about 700 to 800 students gathered to guard the Nittany Lion Shrine from any would-be vandals.

Sometimes, there's just no place like home -- especially when you're roaring down the streets you once called your own, in a golf cart representing the Naples, Fla. Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association.

The State College Borough Council discussed the possibility of dimming light fixtures downtown after residents expressed concern that the lights are encouraging loitering, noise and crime.

"Hick spitting," turkey bowling and blindfolded surgical dressing were just a few of the events that took place at the annual Ag Hill Olympics held yesterday morning at the Snider Agricultural Arena.

Tonight, five men will try to rob a jewelry store inside the Pavilion Theatre.

About 15 Penn State students built a house on the HUB-Robeson Center's lawn Friday -- but its walls were made of straw-bales, not brick, and its signature green roof represented its sustainability.

A record number of women are participating in Panhellenic sorority recruitment, which officially began yesterday afternoon.

Dressed in choir robes mimicking a scene from The Color Purple, members of Penn State's black community stripped off their robes and headed down the runway as Kanye West's "Jesus Walks," pounded through the room.

With hopes of creating a solution to please both community and students, the State College Borough Council addressed the increase of students on campus and the bad reputation many students are receiving at Friday's meeting.

A 24-year-old man fatally shot himself in his sister's Nittany Apartments residence after an eight-hour standoff with police that ended at about 9 a.m. yesterday.

A female State College resident reported to the State College Police Department that two unknown males sexually assaulted her while she was walking home yesterday morning.

Two female students and one man will be cited for disorderly conduct after starting a fight that escalated to involve more than 100 people Saturday morning outside of Lulu's Nightspot, the State College Police Department said.

Thousands of students, alumni and community members lined the streets of downtown State College Friday night to cheer on Penn State's 2006 homecoming parade.

SPORTS

This weekend was the last opportunity for the Penn State men's golf team to make a statement this fall.

Note to Virginia Tech, Loyola and Clemson: Fear the turtle.

This weekend, some of the top teams in the American Collegiate Hockey Association were in Youngstown, Ohio, for the annual ACHA Showcase. The sixteen-team event celebrated the 15-year anniversary of the league.

For the second time this season, one member of the No. 8 Penn State field hockey team controlled the entire offense.

The Lady Icers opened ECWHL conference play with a disappointing road trip, losing both games this weekend to the University of Rhode Island.

It was a good weekend for the Penn State women's tennis team at the ITA Regionals as the Lions claimed several tournament wins.

Heather Tomko screamed at the top of her lungs after she adjusted the hat on her head. Ali Krieger gave a bear hug to anybody in her vicinity before she gladly hoisted the trophy into the air.

This weekend was a monumental occasion for the Penn State women's soccer team: Nine straight Big Ten titles, 100 Big Ten wins and one highly anticipated return.

It took just two minutes of offense to give the Penn State men's soccer a 1-0 lead. It took 88 minutes of defense to hold it.

Though it wasn't their last home game, the seniors of the Penn State men's soccer team defended their turf as if they'd never step on the Jeffrey Field grass again.

At this point, the whole celebration thing has become routine.

Anthony Scirrotto was one of the last players off the field Saturday, weaving his way through a maze of handshakes and pats on the back.

When Jeremy Kapinos finds himself frustrated, he always knows how to relieve his frustrations.

Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley admitted he didn't expect Illinois to run the option so often on Saturday. That wasn't a surprise.

While his team improved its position in the Big Ten standings, Joe Paterno believes Penn State showed minimal improvement from certain units during Saturday's 26-12 win against Illinois.
