It was a good weekend for the Penn State women's tennis team at the ITA Regionals as the Lions claimed several tournament wins.
The team sent three representatives to the tournament, including senior Sasha Abraham, junior Katelyn BeVard and sophomore Lauren Holzberg. While the team was not in full capacity, the three players competed with outstanding effort and were able to defeat some of the top players from the top schools in the country.
Holzberg defeated Virginia's Jennifer Stevens 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round of singles matches before falling to Stephanie Schnietter of Harvard in three sets. Schnietter went into the match seeded 18th, but Holzberg fought hard in her defeat, losing 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
Abraham also had a successful weekend, claiming victory against Army's Sarah Giles-Madden 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, but losing to Harvard's Beier Ko in two sets, 0-6, 6-7(6). Although she fell in the second round, Abraham was happy with her play, and is always looks forward to the next tournament.
"By playing really good schools, it leaves us no room for error," she said. "Everything is individual, and I always try to improve on my play, as I know all of my teammates do, too."
Head coach Buffy Baker was very pleased with her players' efforts and results.
"I thought we ended on a good note," she said. "The level that we were able to sustain was better than what we were able to do earlier in the fall. Holzberg and Abraham both had great wins, and I think that the level that we showed and the way we competed really shows a lot about our team."
That level of play has helped the Lions to achieve success this season. Next week the lions have a break before hosting the Penn State Mock Duals on November 3 and 4.
"With us having a break this week," Baker said, "it gives us a chance to improve on more things. We are going to involve the players in more set practices, as well as try to hammer down the specifics and improve in all aspects."
