Parade delights thousands

Collegian Staff Writer

Thousands of students, alumni and community members lined the streets of downtown State College Friday night to cheer on Penn State's 2006 homecoming parade.

The parade, which reached downtown at 6:30, featured a diverse mix of more than 160 groups, including campus organizations, community groups, greek organizations, four marching bands, politicians and this year's homecoming court.

The floats that brought color to College Avenue had themes ranging from children's movies, such as Ice Age, to television shows such as The Price is Right and American Gladiator, and tourist destinations such as Las Vegas and Paris.

"Everyone was really creative," said Rachel Shaak (junior-geoscience), who rode on the float constructed by the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.

"We had a lot of fun making ours," she said.

Though the rain on Friday morning led to problems with float construction, the parade was a success and went according to schedule, Jackie Fiorello, homecoming parade overall, said.

"The parade went really well," Fiorello said.

Students in the parade were excited as they marched the parade route, despite the cold weather.

"There was a lot of enthusiasm and pride among the organizations and the people watching," said Stephanie Finkelstein (senior-biobehavioral health), who marched backward with Penn State's Lion Scouts.

The sense of spirit downtown as the parade marched was overwhelming, she said.

The homecoming overall committee was impressed by the turnout for the parade, Fiorello said.

"When we were riding through on the overall float, we saw a really good attendance," she said.

One alumnus who made his way back to Happy Valley for his first homecoming said he enjoyed the experience.

"It's the first time I've been to it," Ian Sutcliffe, Class of 2004, said. "I never went when I was here, but I think it's really good."

The effort that went into the floats was visible, he said.

"I'm impressed, some of the them have been really good," he added.

The parade ended as Penn State's Blue Band, led by Blue Sapphire P.J. Maierhofer twirling glow sticks and featuring a shirtless percussion section, rounded Burrowes Street. Onlookers flooded onto College Avenue.

Following the conclusion of the parade, students and community members moved to Old Main lawn to take part in the pep rally, where Ben Jabara and Shartaya Mollett were crowned this year's homecoming king and queen.
