A visitor to Penn State shot himself after an eight-hour standoff with police at Nittany Apartments.
Police confirmed that 24-year-old Qwynton Armstead was in an argument downtown before going to his sister's Nittany Apartment in building 12, Bill Mahon, Penn State spokesman, said.
Occupants of the downstairs apartment called police around 1 a.m. to report they overheard an argument and suspected a gun was present, Mahon said.
When police responded, they evacuated Armstead's sister, the only other occupant in the apartment, and blocked the door, he said.
Nittany Apartments and the surrounding area were evacuated, Mahon said.
The sister told police that her brother held the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, but the gun "clicked", Mahon said.
Police, including the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team and the State College Police Department, negotiated with Armstead, who was in the back bedroom, over the next eight hours until they decided that he may harm himself, he said.
Around 9 a.m., police fired gas into the room. When they entered the room, Armstead had shot himself. He died at the scene, Mahon said.
It is unclear what the suspect was upset about, he said.
An autopsy was expected to begin around 4 p.m. today and take four hours.
