[ Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006 ]
A visitor to Penn State shot himself after an eight-hour standoff with police at Nittany Apartments.

[ Updated Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006 ]
Beginning at 10 last night, between 700 and 800 students gathered across from Rec Hall to guard the Nittany Lion Shrine from any would-be vandals.

As far as style points go, Penn State scored few today. The Nittany Lions did, however, manage to put enough actual points on the scoreboard to defeat Illinois 26-12.

The 2006 Penn State homecoming parade reached downtown State College at 6:30 last night, greeted by streets packed with cheering students, alumni, and community members

[ Friday, Oct. 20, 2006 ]

The honor of being on homecoming court is no longer limited to just Penn State students this year.

During last year's Ohio State game, the techno rhythm known as "Zombie Nation" hit the airwaves at Beaver Stadium nine times -- keeping the crowd pulsating to the music.

The State College man charged with murdering a Penn State student last February was denied bail yesterday, forcing him to remain in prison until his trial.

Downtown State College will be flooded with thousands of onlookers and colorful floats this evening as campus and community groups prepare to celebrate homecoming weekend and demonstrate this year's theme, "Pride In Our Legacy."

Students walking to class Monday morning witnessed a traumatic event as a fellow student collapsed to the ground by the Sparks Building.

Having just consumed a total of 14 hot wings in a two-minute period, Johanna Krajack (junior-world language education) and Sabrina Burrous of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority held up fingers covered in sauce.

As the November elections loom, candidates hoping to represent Centre County faced off in a debate last night -- and some students came to protest.

This Sunday, poker sharks can leave the card table.

Instead of partaking in weekly pregame rituals this weekend, Penn State students will have a chance to help tackle the no. 1 inherited neurological disorder, Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT).

This weekend, age won't stop anyone from enjoying the musical stylings of Tally Hall and The Changes.

Rain may not be the snowboard club's favorite form of precipitation, but last night's storm did not keep the club from hosting its biggest event of the year.

News in brief

SPORTS

At the Georgetown Hoya Invitational, the Penn State men's golf team will try to rectify its up-and down play in its final tournament of 2006.

In the 2005 season, many images defined the resurrection of the Penn State football program. And tomorrow, its artist returns to State College.

The last time the Penn State field hockey team played an away game, a 10-game winning streak was snapped at the hands of Ohio State. This time, the team hopes for a different result on the road.

Last week No. 6 Navy fought off a tough challenge from a No.15 Maryland team, ultimately winning 29-19.

Soccer is supposed to be a non-contact sport. Tonight at Jeffrey Field, it won't be.

The uphill battle for a ninth straight Big Ten title will come down to the final weekend for the Penn State women's soccer team.

The Big Ten conference assigns "travel partners" to each women's volleyball team, meaning that on a given weekend, two teams playing away will face the same opponents who have home matches.

Three games in two days.

Tomorrow's homecoming matchup against Illinois at Beaver Stadium won't only bring the return of thousands of alumni -- it will also mark the return of Penn State starting quarterback Anthony Morelli and his backup, Daryll Clark.

The ACHA Division II Ice Lions are ready to take the ice tomorrow to face off against New York University, but they have no worries about playing one of their biggest competitors.

After narrowly missing the ACHA National Tournament last year, the Penn State Lady Icers return with a more experienced roster and a coaching staff that hopes to return to Nationals.

This was the third year in a row that Penn State men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their seasons in Morgantown, and like the previous two years, the trip was a success.

The top three players on the Penn State women's tennis team will compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Eastern Regional Tournament this weekend.

Although the rain made playing conditions tougher, the Lady Ruggers washed away Vassars' dreams of victory by defeating it 24-5 last night at East Fields.

After undergoing thorough examination and observation over the past five days, Penn State quarterbacks Anthony Morelli and Daryll Clark were medically cleared to play in tomorrow's homecoming contest against Illinois.

If there's one reason not to rule out Illinois -- a 17.5-point underdog in Vegas -- this weekend, it's because of one specific athlete.

Illinois offensive lineman Ryan McDonald has done the best he can to erase last year's 63-10 loss to Penn State from his memory.

ARTS

This weekend No Refund Theatre (NRT) is combining English literature and tropical weather right in the middle of the Forum.

There are two things that matter more than anything else in State College -- football and bars.

To say Nick Flynn has a complicated relationship with his father is an understatement.

If you've ever watched Late Show with David Letterman within the past five years, you know how comical the demeanor of George W. Bush can be.

Of all rock's recent hit makers, the Killers were pretty far down the list of bands likely to start taking themselves way too seriously. Making it big through keyboard-heavy songs tinged with voyeurism ("Mr. Brightside") and ambiguous sexuality ("Somebody Told Me,") the Killers may have just been a trashy pop band, but they were a very good one.

Twenty years after Tom Cruise flew into the danger zone, The Guardian does for the Coast Guard rescue swimmers what Top Gun did for Navy fighter pilots -- makes them oh so sexy.
