NRT explores culture in show

Collegian Staff Writer

This weekend No Refund Theatre (NRT) is combining English literature and tropical weather right in the middle of the Forum.

NRT will present Anna in the Tropics, a play based on Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina tonight and tomorrow at 8 p.m in 111 Forum.

"It's not your average, everyday TV show plot; it's different," Ireida Santiago (sophomore-theatre) said. "It's learning about other cultures and traditions in a unique way."

The play is set in 1929 Florida and focuses on a Cuban-American family, at a time when Cuban cigars were still hand-rolled. The family in the play owns and works in the cigar factory.

Santiago said the play has a good message that comes out of the turmoil in the story.

Actors fom NRT practice the play Anne in the Tropics for tonight.

"I love that it's family-oriented. It's really about knowing how to keep your traditions, your culture and who you are," she said.

Jeff Domenick (senior-mechanical engineering), who plays the new lector, said the play offers a lot of different aspects to entertain students.

"Its really just good entertainment," he said. "There's drama, action and fighting, and a bit of romance. But at the same time, it's also well-made and artful."

Arbulu said the tone is very literary. "The characters talk the way they do in literature because that's what they know, that's what they've been exposed to," she said. "The tone is also a little hopeful at the end, with an extra twist."
