First UPUA meeting spirited

Collegian Staff Writer

UPUA-themed thongs, a shock collar for president Jay Chamberlin and holding meetings at Mad Mex were among the first issues discussed by the existing eight members of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) at an informal meeting last night.

The group commenced the "jamboree" by watching an online clip of yesterday's Fox News segment featuring Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President Nick Stathes' comments about UPUA's "hostile takeover."

As a lion ambassador, Chamberlin said UPUA members will eventually "learn to do a lion dance" just before getting down to the first orders of business.

Chamberlin said a fully functioning body with all its representatives is important before the body can start delving into issues.

Greg Heleniak, the chair of the University Park Allocations Committee, Pedro Huerta of the School of Information Sciences and Technology, and Max Pell of the Eberly College of Science have filled three of the 23 empty spots, leaving 18 empty slots.

With the mentioning of the group's adviser, Felicia McGinty, UPUA representative Hillary Gupta said she didn't know who McGinty was.

"She's one of Vicky Triponey's minions," Chamberlin said.

Belding said "minion" is a strong word and joked about putting a shock collar on Chamberlin to stop him from making such comments.

"I do occasionally go off and talk in ways that are inappropriate," Chamberlin said.

The UPUA's glass-walled office also raised concern.

"We are definitely a transparent government," Mitch Belding, UPUA vice president, said. "We just don't want transparent windows. It's distracting when people walk by and wave, smile, or give the finger."

Making campus diversity a separate committee from campus relations was also discussed along with a possible constitution revision committee.

"The constitution was decided on by people who weren't elected," Chamberlin said.

Chamberlin also said he would like to look at correcting discrepancies in the elections process and possibly moving elections to April or March.

Having a busy schedule, Chamberlin said he will assign things to various committees with separate chairs.

"I can see having a lot on my plate," he said. "I've already been told that I'm going to be at the trustees meeting."

Chamberlin also said that he would like to talk to Stan Latta, director of union and student activities, to make sure UPUA has a five-year office plan.

A retreat was also discussed to help members get to know each other. The location for the retreat is undecided.

"We could camp out in the Wal-Mart parking lot," Belding said jokingly.

Office hours and other matters were mentioned briefly and decided to be confirmed when the body is fully functioning.

Temporarily, meeting times will be at 9 p.m. on Mondays in the UPUA office.
