Penn State may be without its top two quarterbacks for this weekend's game against Illinois, as Penn State sports information director Jeff Nelson said starter Anthony Morelli and backup Daryll Clark are listed as "possible" to play after both suffered mild concussions during Saturday's loss to Michigan.
Morelli's father, Greg Morelli, said yesterday that his son has been "symptom-free" since Saturday night and had undergone medical evaluation yesterday morning. The elder Morelli added that his son would play this weekend if cleared by doctors.
"I don't know if you expect anything at this level, but he hopes to play," Greg Morelli said of his son.
Greg Morelli said he visited his son at his on-campus apartment Saturday night after the game.
"He was laughing and joking around," he said.
Morelli suffered the concussion on his first pass attempt of the second half when Michigan defensive tackle Alan Branch appeared to levy a helmet-to-helmet hit on the junior quarterback. No flags were thrown, though.
On his back for several minutes after the hit, Morelli eventually walked off the field on his own power.
Despite the injury, Greg Morelli said his son asked the team's medical staff if he could return to the game and even put his helmet on after Penn State pulled within a touchdown with a little more than three minutes left in the game.
"He wanted to be in for the last drive, but they sat him down and rightfully so," Greg Morelli said.
Filling in for Morelli, Clark suffered his concussion in the fourth quarter after he was tackled hard on a 7-yard run. Clark also left the field on his own power.
If neither Morelli nor Clack can play this weekend, sophomore Paul Cianciolo, who led the final two Penn State drives Saturday, would likely get the start, with redshirt freshman Kevin Suhey also a possibility.
