Injury sidelines Morelli

Collegian Staff Writer

Anthony Morelli suffered a concussion in Saturday's game but did not make a trip to the hospital, assistant athletic director Jeff Nelson said yesterday.

As of press time, there was no timetable on Morelli, but Nelson said more information would become available later today. As far as backup Daryll Clark, who was also injured against Michigan, Joe Paterno implied he suffered from whiplash after his neck hit the turf. Clark also did not make a hospital visit, Nelson said.

"[Morelli] couldn't remember anything," Paterno said after the game. "I haven't really had a chance to talk to the doctor about Daryll. But he got hit and snapped his neck back so they were a bit worried about that."

Emergency quarterback Paul Cianciolo took over in the fourth quarter when Clark was thrown to the turf after a seven-yard run. It was a game that saw the redshirt sophomore record his first career pass attempt, completion and touchdown.

It was also a name Michigan coach Lloyd Carr wasn't familiar with.

"You know, we had -- what was his name?" Carr asked, pausing before receiving an answer. "I thought he did a great job; I did not know his name. We knew their second guy... but Ciancis? Ciancolo? Cianciolo?

"I'll tell you one thing, he did one hell of a job. I'll know his name the next time."

Morelli exited the game after going 11-for-18 for 133 yards. His day ended after Alan Branch leveled him on what appeared to be helmet-to-helmet contact, although there were no flags on the play.

Fans in the student section cheer for the Nittany Lions throughout Saturday night's game against Michigan.

"It was sketchy," Tony Hunt said about the hit. "I don't think it was intentional or anything like that, but it might have been a little iffy."

After Morelli left the game in the third quarter, the offense mostly sputtered, converting on only 1-of-6 third downs. Excluding Hunt's screen that wound up in the end zone, both backup signal callers finished a combined 5-for-12 for 24 yards.

For some players, it was the first time they were ever involved in a game with two quarterbacks suffering injuries on the same team. Michigan defensive end LaMarr Woodley was one of them.

"I was wondering who they were going to put in after the second quarterback went down," he said. "I was never in a game like that -- well, high school, I have. I think they put a receiver back there at quarterback."

The Nittany Lions didn't have to resort to that, but the status of Morelli and Clark remains unclear for next week. Morelli left under his own power after the game, carrying his helmet in his right hand, and talking to tackle Chris Auletta on his way to the tunnel.

That was good news for Penn State, as Hunt said Morelli was "doing fine" after the game, although he admitted Morelli was pretty frustrated he couldn't play.

"It's kind of like one of those not-supposed-to-happen type things," Hunt said. "It's a weird feeling."
