Free speech opens debate
As I read the Collegian Opinion Page every day, I can't help feeling slightly concerned about the Penn State community's attitude toward free speech. It appears that instead of engaging others in debates about various issues, we feel the need to shut them up and deny them their First Amendment rights. I hear that I am going to hell every time I pass the steps of Willard. It's the Willard Preacher, why should I take anything he has to say seriously? The LGTBA isn't forcing me to be gay, so why should I care if they feel like expressing pride in their way of life? I look forward to these events because they provide a change in scenery, and they prove to me how diverse Penn State is at times when I may feel otherwise. There may be times when free speech should be suppressed. But this is only in matters of safety and security, not in matters of discomfort. If you don't want to hear what's being said, go in the other entrance to Willard. Or, be proactive and drown out the messages of ignorance and hate with messages of tolerance and peace.
