My Opinion
Moving on provides sense of déjá vu

My sister frequently offers comments on anything I write.

She often tells me that I'm not funny (I admit that I'm not). And her most recent complaint was that I have not written a column about her.

My sister is a senior in high school right now and looking for her perfect college. She's making visits, filling out applications and hoping for some scholarship money.

She's looking for that perfect fit. She's at that horrible, yet wonderful, time when there seems to be so many options. Yet, there's pressure to make a decision.

You know the feeling. You have all these options and all these ideas about your perfect college.

You might have found that what you originally wanted at the beginning of your college search changed by the end. Or you stayed the course throughout the whole process.

Now, about one-quarter of Penn State students are right back where they were four years ago. In the next few months, they'll be making a lot of decisions.

Graduate school? Teach for America? A job?

Do you want to live in your hometown? Do you want to go far away? Rural? City? Suburb?

What if nobody hires you and you have to live with your parents?

And how many times is some important person in your life going to ask, "So, what do you want to do with your life?"

Your advisers are saying you should try this. Your friends are saying try something else. Your parents have expectations. And all you want to do is scream at the top of your lungs.

But you sit there and quietly stew as you try to deal with your stress.

It's a rough process.

It's stressful. Some of your friends seem so together about it, while others are falling apart.

You want to do so many things, but know you need to make a decision.

You're in the exact same place you were four years ago; and you don't know what to do.

If you're majoring in a non-technical major, the career fair probably didn't offer you much. Yet, you're engineering and business major friends all seem to have interviews lined up.

Really, don't worry about it so much. And if you're stressed, go home for a weekend. Just relax a little bit. Think about what you like to do. It's really not as bad as it seems. Graduation isn't until May.

Just remember what it was like when you chose Penn State or when your high school friends chose their respective colleges.

It's the same idea, just at a different time in your life.

Didn't everything work out when you chose Penn State?
