Bundy's comments shock some

Collegian Staff Writer

When Jay Bundy thought he would be University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) president and called the coming year a "shitshow," many were surprised, even his vice president, Chris Brink.

"I was shocked," he said. "This is not the same Jay that I originally decided to run with."

However, Brink said Bundy has behaved like this before.

"This is typical," he said. "It happened last year about this time. He totally went off the deep end. He disappeared for a couple days, and they found him passed out on the steps of some building at Penn State."

Brink said he noticed Bundy's behavior getting "unprofessional" at the debate on Oct. 9 when he screamed at UPUA transition chairman Andrew Reeve for warning him that handing out unstamped copies of his 100-day plan violated the elections code.

"He went and yelled at him just to prove a point," he said. "The only point he made was that he has a short temper, and nobody looks for that."

Brink said the lack of support at the election day party may have led to Bundy's unusual statements.

"I think [Bundy] is only acting like this because he thinks no one wants him to be president," Brink added. "Just talking to him, he is an intense person. I can only imagine how intense he is inside his own head."

Bundy said he stands by every word he said.

"Using my appropriate French, I finalized that with the word shitshow. If people were offended by that, I apologize," he said. "We're gonna say sweet nothings on the record all day long. Cut. Quote. Print. That's sounds a lot better than no comment. It's all a game."

He added that the lack of voters was what prompted the comments

"Everyone showed up to put a new prez in the White House. Why is it that 2,000 students showed up to take care of their representation here in State College?" he asked. "I'm supposed to be laid back, cool, calm and collected about it? That's apathy, and it's disgusting."

Chris Peters, member of the Penn State chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, the organization Bundy is president of, said he thinks Bundy is just trying to get people fired up.

"I think he's just trying to get people to create energy to get their attention to participate instead of not caring," he said. "He's definitely being overly dramatic. He's just trying to get people to be interested."

Nick Stathes, Undergraduate Student Government (USG) president, said he did not understand Bundy's reference to the "Bundy/Stathes administration."

He said that he feels sorry for Galen Foulke, the former USG president who was instrumental in forming UPUA, Reeve and those who worked hard to make sure UPUA was put in place.

"Now that the elections are over, Jay's comments sort of question the validity of the entire organization," he said.

Foulke said he wasn't the least bit surprised by Bundy's actions.

"I'm not shocked. It's not like I didn't see this coming. Folks warned me a long time ago," Foulke said. "I didn't actually think he'd drop the F-bomb."

Reeve said he also had suspicions.

"I thought something might be afoot, but I dismissed it because I didn't think anyone would be that pathetic," he said. "My only hope is that the administration can look past this one person and look toward the good of the group."

Tom Shakely, newly elected UPUA off-campus representative, said he couldn't believe Bundy's behavior.

"My first reaction is unprintable. I would describe it as shock," he said. "I don't know what he was thinking when he said those things. It was a betrayal of the trust that the voters put in him."

Frank Criscione, USG senate vice president, said some of the USG members rooted for Bundy to win, not knowing Bundy had such an attitude.

"I give him kudos for being honest about UPUA," Criscione said. "But I think there are much nicer ways to rephrase 'shitshow.' "
