Bundy's fate to be decided tonight

Collegian Staff Writer

The University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) elections commission will meet tonight to decide whether to certify Jay Bundy as UPUA president.

Katie Vogel, UPUA elections commissioner, said she expected a final decision to be made.

"It should be definite unless something really random comes up. But I'm pretty sure it will be definite," she said.

UPUA transition group officials have promised since April that UPUA will be fully functioning by today.

Bundy received the highest vote totals in Wednesday's UPUA election, but elections commissioners would not certify him because of pending violations. Alleged violations include unstamped fliers advertising a video of the debate posted on Bundy's Web site and unstamped posters hanging outside of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, 319 N. Burrowes St., and Bundy's house.

On Thursday, Vogel mistakenly said that Bundy had been certified as the official president.

Upon hearing the news, Bundy made a series of unusual comments, calling student voters "stupid" and saying he aimed to have the "lowest approval rating in history."

Ashley Hill, head elections commissioner, said later that day that Sara Snyder, the third elections commissioner, still needed to be consulted about Bundy's violations before a decision could be made.

Vogel said all three elections commissioners are expected to be present at tonight's meeting.

When asked if Bundy's recent comments would impact the commission's decision about whether to disqualify him, Vogel said, "that's something that has to be discussed tonight."

Vogel said she believes the second-place candidate, Jay Chamberlin, will become president if Bundy is disqualified. However, she said she needed to verify that fact with the other commissioners.

Hill and Snyder did not immediately return calls.
