Langhorne Strikers conquer the IM world

For The Collegian

The lights at the Intramural fields shut off around 7 last night, putting the 8 p.m. Intramural co-ed soccer championship in doubt.

At 7:20 p.m., the lights came back on and the battle for the all-important IM co-ed soccer championship was at hand.

Despite a brief rain, and Pink Floyd's The Wall and multiple sound checks coming from the direction of Jeffrey Field, the Langhorne Strikers beat the Archiballers to claim the IM co-ed soccer championship, 5-1.

It was a defensive struggle for most of the first half until the Strikers scored first as sophomore Samuel Rurigi (sophomore-communications) put one away on a breakaway to take a lead.

The Archiballers had multiple scoring opportunities in the first half, but goalie and captain Sean Kennedy (junior-finance) made several key saves including a series in which he stopped a shot and then moved quickly to his left to stop the rebound.

With less than 30 seconds left in the first half, Mike Lesch (freshman-supply chain and information systems) placed his corner kick to the left corner of the goal, deflecting off of his brother Keith (freshman-business management) to tie the game at 1-1.

The Archiballers started off the second half pressuring Langhorne, until Rurigi put the Strikers in the lead for good as he streaked down the field, side-stepped a defender and scored to make it 2-1.

Josh Mansilla (senior-supply chain and information systems) gave Langhorne a greater cushion as he scored the first of his three highlight-reel goals.

Mansilla's second goal was a breakaway that goalie Caitlin Daley (freshman-architecture) challenged, leaving Mansilla with an open net to put Langhorne up 4-1.

"Once we got our second half lead they pushed everyone up, letting our speedster [Mansilla] get some breakaway goals," Kennedy said.

Even with the poor weather, the damp field did not affect the match.

"The field wasn't too bad," Alyssa Montemore (sophomore-kinesology) said.

Intramural rules stipulate that three girls must play at all times, and the Strikers, only having seven players, three of them being female, could have tired during the later stages of the game.

But according to Kennedy, they have played with seven players the entire season, including playing three games with only five players. On the other hand, the Archiballers had three extra players to work with.

"The key to winning [co-ed IM soccer] is good girls," Mansilla said.

The Archiballers are Daley, Jeremy Childs, Laura Howard, Anthony Catanzaro, Zach Appman, Stacey Weismiller, Mark Lesch, Keith Lesch and Emily Wood.

The Langhorne Strikers are Kiera Walsh, Montemore, Cait Watts, Kennedy, Mansilla, Carlton McKinnon and Rurigi.

Both Langhorne and the Archiballers were the only teams to have won their leagues outright.
