The Saloon may be turning 30, but it still knows how to have a good time.
According to The Saloon's MySpace page www.myspace.com/homeofthemonkeyboy, the establishment, 101 Hiester St., is a 30-year-old male. But no matter what gender you are, there is plenty of fun to be had tomorrow at The Saloon's birthday bash, event planner Jen Hoag said.
The Saloon will open its doors three hours early to kick off the tiki-themed party, which starts at 5 p.m. and ends at 2 a.m.
Hoag said many events are planned throughout the evening, including a musical birthday bash and drink specials, including $5 Monkey Boys, the bar's signature drink, and half-priced happy hour from 9 to 11 p.m.
A normal Thursday at The Saloon usually attracts about 300 people, Hoag said. But since tomorrow is not an ordinary night for the birthday "boy," 600 to 700 people are expected to attend.
During an all-star jam, at least 25 musicians will be playing originals and songs performed by popular bands that have visited The Saloon in the past 30 years.
Hoag said some of the original members of bands that have previously played at The Saloon will be there for the jam session, which starts at 5 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.
One of the bands whose music will be featured tomorrow is Queen Bee. Original members of that band are going to play during the special musical show. The usual musical entertainment that is regularly featured on a nightly basis begins after the all-star jam. Giveaways are also planned for the evening, Hoag said.
The giveaways will be conducted like a raffle drawing. People will put a ticket in a hat, out of which winners will be chosen. Glassware, T-shirts and beer towers are also being given away throughout the evening.
The Saloon is also still in the process of collecting some more items that will be given away during tomorrow's bash, Hoag said.
Thirtieth anniversary T-shirts and monkey-head pitchers will also be on sale. Three hundred commemorative monkey head pitchers are currently available, with an additional 700 available in the next two weeks.
But after these pitchers sell out, no more will be available.
Hoag invited everyone to get into spirit for the event.
"Bring your Hawaiian shirts if you want to," she said.
