Election results to be announced but not official

Collegian Staff Writer

Although the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) elections commission plans to announce the numerical results of today's election tonight, the winner of the presidential race will not be official, Katie Vogel, elections commissioner for candidacy and campaigning, said.

Vogel said that a number of elections code violations had occurred during the day and she had not yet had adequate time to review them. She added that they would certify the winner within the week.

"There were some things that have been brought up today," she said. "We'll have to discuss what went on."

Vogel said she has been in touch with presidential candidate Jay Bundy about his violations in order to hear his side.

According to the UPUA elections code, the elections commission can reduce a candidate's campaign spending limit as a punishment for violating the code. Exceeding the spending limit leads to automatic disqualification.

Vogel said disqualification would be a "worst case scenario" punishment for today's violations.

However, since candidates have no reason to spend money after the elections have taken place, reductions in their spending limits that do not lead to disqualification will have little to no effect.
