Candidates sound off

For The Collegian

This year's University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) candidates used the Perspective Mic this afternoon as an opportunity to discuss their platforms one last time with potential voters. The event, held at noon today in the HUB, included presidential candidates Michael Hines and Jay Bundy, as well as Jay Chamberlin's running mate, Mitch Belding.

"[The event was] intended to give the candidates a chance to increase civic engagement," Tina Brazil, president of the social awareness committee, said. Brazil coordinated today's event.

Bundy spoke first, reiterating his "100 day plan" and asking if any other candidates had a plan.

Belding said Chamberlin chose to attend today's National Coming Out Day rally at Old Main as an example of how their ticket supports diversity at Penn State.

"Actions speak louder than words," Belding said.

Hines told the audience he was disappointed in past student government and the UPUA election process.

"In the past, there has been too much drama in USG -drama that has hurt the student voice," said Belding, "[and I'm] an advocate for keeping the drama low."
